History
The Center Mutual Insurance Company story
began in 1911 when a group of 83 farmers in Pierce and McHenry counties formed
the Farmers Mutual Storm Cyclone and Tornado Insurance Company. The
company reorganized in 1915 and eventually became known as the Farmers Mutual
Insurance Company of Rugby. In 1957, the company acquired the Benson
County Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company.
The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Rugby
continued to progress and grow, operating as a county mutual. By law a
county mutual was restricted to writing rural risks in a ten county area.
To allow for further growth, a merger was arranged with a domestic mutual
insurance company, and in 1969, the name Center Mutual Insurance Company
was adopted. In 1970, the company acquired the Farmers Mutual Insurance
Company of Wells County.
In 1982, Center Mutual expanded into South
Dakota, at which time the company enjoyed a
steady growth until the introduction of personal automobile insurance in 1984.
Since then the premiums written and number of policies issued have increased
dramatically.
Center Mutual's premium volume increased from
$300,000 in 1970, to about $28,000,000 in 2005. In 2006, the company
showed assets of over $32,000,000 and surplus of over $14,500,000.
Center Mutual has 35 employees and services
over 30,000 insurance policies.
